The Lake by Bianca Bellová, translated from Czech by Alex Zucker is one of the finalists for the EBRD Literature Prize 2023.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, EBRD, has announced the three finalists for the EBRD Literature Prize 2023, selected by a panel of independent judges. The prize is unique in that it recognises both authors and their English-language translators from countries where the bank operates, promoting cultural diversity and literary expression. This year’s finalists are works originally published in the Czech Republic, Lebanon, and Poland, translated into English and published by UK or Europe-based publishers in the previous year.

The three best works of translated literature submitted for the Prize this year are:

  • Mister N by Najwa Barakat, translated from Arabic by Luke Leafgren (And Other Stories). Country: Lebanon
  • The Lake by Bianca Bellová, translated from Czech by Alex Zucker (Parthian Books).
    Country: Czech Republic
  • The Books of Jacob by Olga Tokarczuk, translated from Polish by Jennifer Croft (Fitzcarraldo Editions). Country: Poland

The winner will be announced on 15 June at an award ceremony in London.
